CHUU WAI

Chuu Wai photographed in Paris, France by Arnaud Juherian.

Chuu Wai stands among an emerging group of young, fearless artists from Myanmar who are determined to use the visual arts to influence change and realize a future that is free, inclusive, democratic, and just. Chuu stands apart, as one of only a few female artists, within a patriarchal society where women´s experiences with harassment, discrimination, inequality, and under-representation are compounded by tradition, conservative values, and cultural practices, and often overlooked. She stands in solidarity with artists and change makers everywhere who are upholding democracy and resisting oppressive social norms and stereotypes.

Currently living in exile in France, she has exhibited her art in Myanmar, as well as internationally at exhibitions in London, Luxembourg, Paris, Hong Kong, Canberra, and Mandalay. Her work is strongly influenced by the two worlds that she straddles; Myanmar where she was born and her new life in exile in Paris, France.

In this exclusive series of prints for THE GRAPA, Chuu Wai uses vibrant colours to boldly assert the presence and role of women in society, as well as the impact of war.
